It's Monday! What are you reading?

It's Monday! What are you reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. Jen Vincent over at Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee Moye from Unleashing Readers decided to put a children's and YA spin on it and they invite anyone with an interest to join in. You can participate by creating your post then visit one of their sites to add your site. Finally, visit at least three participant blogs and comment to spread the love.

The Past Week:
Young Adult

Hattie Ever After reminded me of Anne of Green Gables somehow and I loved it. Shadows is a Robin McKinley book and I always love her books, but this time, it was just okay. I liked it, but wished I liked it more. I will review it later this week. Unravel Me was a great addition to Shatter Me. I am eager for the third book. Days of Blood and Starlight is another that left me wanting the next. They both played with my emotions.

Graphic Novel

Not a big fan of this one, but that may just be my weariness of the Lewis & Clark story always told without a lot of regard for the Native perspective.

Picture Books

The Longest Night is a beautiful telling of the Passover story. I also enjoyed reading Sand Island. We found it in an independent book store in Bayfield in sight of Madeline Island, one of the other Apostle Islands. I have not been to Sand Island, but have seen it from shore and am happy to find a book linked to Wisconsin history.

Surprise Find

I am not really a big football fan, though I watch a few games here and there and attend the local high school games, so I wasn't expecting much from this one. I found Tim's life pretty fascinating though and thought that the book was highly engaging with many pictures and vivid descriptions. Excellent for reluctant readers - especially fans.

The Coming Week:
I am listening to Looking for Alaska, a book I have read in the past, but didn't love. I'm giving it another chance. I am also reading Adventures in Graphica, a professional book I have been working on for a few weeks. I have starting Dream Thieves and will also be cracking open If You Could Be Mine, Peace Warriors and If I Ever Get Out of Here. Have a great week full of reading!

  1. Didn't you just love Hattie Ever After? I would love to hear more of Hattie's story but Kirby Larson says it's time to give Hattie her peace to live out the rest of her story.

  6. Days of Blood and Starlight is such a gut-wrenching read. It is so cruel that we have to wait...Someday I will get to Shatter Me. I feel like I am the last person around who hasn't read it...
    Have a great week! http://wp.me/pzUn5-1BQ

    1. I felt that way about Shatter Me too, but this way you will get to read all three in a row. The benefit of waiting.

  7. Thanks for sharing the Tebow bio! My youngest son (an eager reader) LOVES Tebow, and my older son (a reluctant reader) is a huge football fan (though not a Tebow fan--probably only because his little brother is, you know how it goes). I'll have to get this one for them. How is Looking for Alaska on audio? It's probably my least favorite John Green, but I might enjoy rereading it if it's narrated well. Days of Blood & Starlight is at the top of the TBR pile but I keep putting it off because I know I'm going to be disappointed to have to wait for Book 3!

    1. Looking for Alaska is a good audio. The narrator distinguishes well between the voices which is a plus since there aren't always cues in the text as to who is talking. I am definitely enjoying it more on the re-read. It had been my least favorite John Green also which is why it puzzled me that it was an award winner.

It is going to be a long wait for Book 3. You are wise to wait.

  8. Sorry to hear about the McKinley book Shadows. I usually love her tales too! Thanks also for telling about Unravel Me & Shatter Me. I don't know those at all-will look for them. I loved the Hattie books-wish there would be more! My Grandpa looks cute too! Lots of good reading here!

  9. Hi there Crystal, I know what you mean about Looking for Alaska - it was my first John Green novel and I felt sad that I couldn't get to it as much as I thought I should. Good luck with the audio book, I hope it would prove to be a different experience. I hope I could read the Hattie books soon. I've read so many great reviews about them. Not familiar with Dream Thieves so I'd look out for that one. :)
