Slice of Life 2025 - It Starts

A large cross section of an orange is centered and the title Slice of Life is on it. The address for The Two Writing Teachers wordpress blog is also there in small print. The Slice of Life Challenge was created by the people over at the blog Two Writing Teachers. The challenge is to write about some part of your day and share it each Tuesday then give feedback to at least three other bloggers.

Last night I suddenly remembered that Slice of Life would begin today. I almost forgot and would have been very disappointed to miss the start. Fortunately, it came to mind in time for me to sign up before bed.

My plan was to write in the morning before the activities of the day, but that didn't happen. The morning unfolded in other ways so I kept my eyes open for that one special thing to write about, but there were actually too many to choose from. Would I write about bumping into an artist downtown whose work I enjoy and chatting with her? Or seeing a friend from bookclub at the art gallery just moments later? Would I write about being greeted by a student at the farmer's market? Or would I share about the delightful breeze on this sunny day as I rode my bicycle home? Would it be better to write about walking with family at the arboretum and seeing the many blooming things on our way to the cafe for lunch? And of course, the Brigadeiro ice cream cone after lunch that reminded me of our student from Brazil was deserving of an ode on its own.

As I contemplated one thing and another, it came to me that today was quite full of delights and though there are many things to be concerned about in life right now, this exercise will have me paying more attention to my surroundings and the special moments that may sometimes go unacknowledged. That's one of the things that makes this practice so meaningful. We take time to notice. We take time to share. What a gift.

Noticing little things that bring a smile is my plan for March. You had a lot to smile about today.

  3. One of my favorite things about Slicing is when various writers remind me to slow down & notice the small moments. Sometimes those small moments hold something that makes another person smile. Happy Slicing!
