Since my son is graduating at the end of this week, I have not had much time to read, but did get to a few of the books on my TBR list. My favorite of all this past week was The Humming Room inspired by The Secret Garden. The author created a brand new story with whispers and hints of that long lost garden. I loved it.
Silly Sally is always fun especially when paired with Jim Gill's fantastic song The Silly Dance Contest so I had a blast reading it with the first grade students and dancing our hearts out.
Being Wendy was a nice book about individuality. Not my favorite, but it was okay.
Up for the next week: Maybe not much. We will have guests this week and graduation, so I may get a few Don and Audrey Wood picture books read at school tomorrow for first grade book club, but other than that, I can't make many plans.
I liked the Humming Room as well- I love how you described it: "The author created a brand new story with whispers and hints of that long lost garden. I loved it." Perfect :)
ReplyDeleteHappy reading this week (and enjoy your guest)! :)
Thanks Kellee!
DeleteIsn't The Humming Room grand? I read it this past week too and really enjoyed it. Can't say I enjoyed Call it Courage or The Matchlock Gun though. Read them last year and thought they were pretty awful.
ReplyDeleteI am definitely a fan of The Humming Room, but those Newberys sure can be dreadful. This has been more of a challenge than I anticipated, but I am really looking forward to some of the later ones.
DeleteI read the Humming Room recently as well. I appreciated that it was an obvious companion for The Secret Garden, but also enough of its own story as well. And Silly Sally is fun :) Never read it aloud to a group, I bet that was great!

Silly Sally has them chiming in a lot. It really is fun to say Silly Sally went to town walking backwards upside down. It's great aloud. Thanks for the comments.
