It's Monday! What are you reading?

It's Monday! What are you reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys. Jen Vincent over at Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee Moye from Unleashing Readers decided to put a children's and YA spin on it and they invite anyone with an interest to join in. You can participate by creating your post then visit one of their sites to add your site. Finally, visit at least three participant blogs and comment to spread the love.

If you want to know more about what I am reading, visit me at my Goodreads shelf. Images via Goodreads unless otherwise noted.

The Past Week:

Nightbird by Alice Hoffman -  I picked up this ARC at ALA Midwinter. This is a middle grade book with a taste of fantasy and mystery. There's someone leaving messages all around town about owls, a monster in the woods, And a spell cast by a witch. All of this is combined deliciously in a story with friendship and family. I'll be happy to share it students.

Monster Goose Nursery Rhymes - I reviewed this one on the blog

Uptown by Bryan Collier - This is a fun and jazzy look at a young boy's community. It bounces and would be a great mentor text for sense of place.

Kamik: An Inuit Puppy Story by Donald Uluadluak - I found this a very cute look at a young boy and his grandfather as the boy learns about how to care for his new puppy.

Hold Me Down by Calvin Slater - I reviewed this one at Rich in Color

Uptown was my favorite of the week.

The Coming Week:

Have a wonderful week of reading!

  1. I am going to read Monster Goose soon too--It is good to hear that it is good :)
Uptown looks great! A good connection to Harlem maybe?

    Happy reading this week! :)

  3. I'll be interested to see what you think of White Dove, Black Raven, Crystal. I've been reading it for a while as you probably know, but am so busy, not really reading much. It's interesting, holds numerous voices like the other two, but I'm still unsure about it. Thanks for highlighting Hold Me Down.

    1. I had to go back and forth a few times already because I was trying to figure out how old the narrators (or essay writers) were. You really have to pay attention with Wein's books.

  5. I really enjoyed reading your post about Monster Goose. It sounds like it would be a lot of fun to read, with and without kids. Kamik: An Inuit Puppy Story sounds like perfect addition to our first nations collection.
