Diversity in Children's and Young Adult Literature
Diversity in children's and young adult literature is something that I have been passionate about for quite some time. I believe that readers benefit from having diverse reading choices. I wrote a post about this over on Rich in Color last year called Why We Need Diverse Literature and How to Find It. Speaking of Rich in Color, here is a podcast that explains why and how Audrey and I co-founded Rich in Color, a blog promoting young adult books by or about people of color.
Over the past year or so I have become more and more of an activist as I realized that there are diverse books being published, but not in the numbers that would reflect the actual people in our country and things aren't changing as quickly as I would like. As part of this activism, I am doing a lot of things in my own school and school district, but I have also been trying to reach beyond my walls. It's exciting because I've had several opportunities lately to encourage others to read and promote diverse literature. I was able to write a Nerdybookclub post about my students and library. I was also a contributor to the School Library Journal Diversity issue. I have to admit that writing is still scary for me, but I want things to change. I believe my students deserve to see themselves in the books that they read. They also deserve to see the wide variety of people that share this world with them.
On this blog, my goal is to talk about all kinds of books and share some of my experiences as I teach and learn with my students. Thanks for joining me on this journey.
**I forgot to mention this, but the #WeNeedDiverseBooks Campaign is an excellent resource and a way to involved in bringing more diversity to children's and young adult literature.

We Need Diverse Books
A few months after we started Rich in Color I wrote a blog post about why we need diverse lit. It is still one of my favorite pieces of writing because diverse lit means a lot to me and I want diverse lit to be available for all of our children and the grownups too.
One other place that I have addressed this is in an article that is part of School Library Journal's Diversity Issue. I was more than a little excited to be able to contribute there. By the way, here are some of the resources that I highlighted in the article:

A snapshot of a few books on my list of favorites |
Finally, May 2nd is a day for discussion and continued use of social media, but Saturday is the day when we are going to be challenged to purchase materials. Just in case you are wondering what to buy or track down at the library, I wanted to give you a some titles of my favorite diverse lit. That list was done for Multicultural Children's Lit Day and I kept it to picture books and middle grade. I've since modified it to include young adult lit. The more inclusive list is now on my goodreads shelf.
Happy reading!

Multicultural Children's Book Day
The bloggers at Jump Into a Book and Pragmatic Mom came up with the idea to celebrate Multicultural Children's Book Day. It sounded like a fantastic idea to me. Celebrating books and diversity at the same time is a definite winner.
If you are wondering why we need such a day or diverse literature, I wrote a post about that over on Rich in Color that addresses that question.
Here are some of my favorite multicultural children's lit titles.
I have connected with these books, cried, laughed, thought, and even dreamed. These are stories that matter. They help me see the strength and diversity in our world and share it with my students. If you are interested in seeing this list with more information about each title along with reviews, please visit my Multicultural Children's Book Day shelf on Goodreads.

Diversity Notes
I am trying out a new idea. I am posting over at Rich in Color about YA books, but I would like a spot to gather Children's Lit and YA together particularly as it relates to diversity. Once a week I would like to compile the information and links that have come my way. So here goes my first attempt.
