The Past Week in Books: I didn't read much this week because I was taking a week-long grad class - Ho-Chunk Indigenous Arts & Sciences. I was driving over two hours a day in addition to an 8 hr class so I was zonked and only watched my K-drama at night (Jewel in the Palace).
On Saturday, I spent a good chunk of the afternoon on the back porch with Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng and really enjoyed it. There was a lot to think about regarding adoption, colorblindness, family dynamics, meticulously planned lives and a bit of romance among other things. This one would be an excellent book for discussion. It was one of the books on my MustReadin2018 list. It's also on the Battle of the Books list for the local librarian battle in September. I need to get reading since there are nine more books on the list and it's the first one I have read for the battle. Eeek!
The Coming Week: I'm still reading Waking Up White and re-reading Braiding Sweetgrass. I'm about to start Children of Blood and Bone and will have more time to read this week so I may also read An American Marriage.

Oh my, I've heard SO many good things about Little Fires Everywhere. And I hope you enjoy Children of Blood and Bone! I did that one as an audiobook and I just have to say that Bahni Turpin is such a gifted narrator!! She spoke the words I didn't know how to pronounce and even read in the other languages, so it all left so authentic. I'm excited for book #2!! Have a great week, Crystal!
ReplyDeleteSince the Ng book is set in Cleveland, I should read it, but since it's not middle grade, I probably won't. The last adult book I read was Hillbilly Elegy so I can have conversations with other grown ups!
ReplyDeleteI finished Little Fires Everywhere a little while ago. You are right that there is a lot to unpack in that novel.
ReplyDeleteI am always attracted to the cover of Little Fires Everywhere but never seem to get to reading it. Children of Blood and Bone as well. Teaching 5/6, I don't seem to make as much time for YA as I would like. Great post!
