It's Monday! What are you Reading?

Jen & Kellee over at Teach Mentor Texts host a meme every Monday that invites people to share the children's and young adult books they have been reading over the past week and what they plan on reading the following week.

You may find more complete information about what I am reading at Goodreads or by clicking on the Goodreads widget along the side of my blog.

The Past Week:

Picture Books

The hair in Super Hair-o is fantastic! The poems in Follow Follow boggled my mind. Using one poem reading down is one perspective and reading it in reverse is another - and they both make sense. Hide and Seek Fog was not a really action packed book and the illustrations were okay, but I liked the idea of it. I remember playing hide and seek in the fog before school out in the field in elementary school. We lived near the ocean and it would roll in to bring a different feeling to the playground. I also read a word that was new to me - spoddled. If you know what it means please enlighten me.

Young Non-fiction

This is a great look at history and also about the power of one person's voice.

Young Adult

Taylor's voice in The White Bicycle was fabulous. I felt like I knew her and would recognize her if she gave me a call. I also felt like I was seeing some of my former students in many of her actions and thoughts. I read it for the Printz Challenge. The Drowned Cities was full of action and more love than I had anticipated. Not romantic love, but enduring and committed love. Summer of the Mariposas was a story of family told with a splash of magical realism. Beautiful.

The Coming Week:
I am listening to Weedflower, reading a digital ARC of Almost Home from NetGalley, and am in the middle of Stick Dog. I will finish all of those this week, but will also begin reading Gringolandia  and Rogue by Lyn Miller-Lachman. Otherwise, I still have a nice big stack of books on the shelf if I finish those too quickly. Have a great week filled with reading!

  1. I do like Weedflower, and I think there's a new nonfiction book on the Japanese Internment available... but I can't think what it's called. Lots of good fiction books have come out recently on the topic, like Dean Hughes Missing in Action.

    1. I foundation newer picture book on the topic from Lee and Low - Where Sunflowers Grow. I read Silvia and Aki too. I will look for the non-fiction. Would be good to have something to pair with it.

  3. Somebody else who's read The White Bicycle! Yay! I thought it was quite good. I think I gave it 4 stars as well. STILL haven't read The Drowned Cities yet, which is one I REALLY need to get to. I've heard mixed things about Summer of the Mariposas but the plot really intrigues me.

    1. I want to read the earlier books now too. I really enjoyed Taylor and want to know more about her. Summer of the Mariposas grew on me. The longer I read it, the more I liked it. I am funny about magical realism though. I really have to force myself to just go with it instead of flipping out about how that is sooooo not possible.
