It's Monday! What are you reading?

It's Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Kathryn at Book Date. It's a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It's also a great chance to see what others are reading right now...you just might discover your next “must-read” book!

Kellee Moye, of Unleashing Readers, and Jen Vincent, of Teach Mentor Texts decided to give It's Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children's literature - picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit - join us! We love this meme and think you will, too. We encourage everyone who participates to visit at least three of the other kidlit book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

If you go to my Goodreads account, you can see what I have read recently & click on the books to learn more.

I was very busy this week with a class I took called Indigenous Arts and Sciences. I've taken it in the past and it was interesting to do it online this time. What I love is hearing from the elders. It also pushes everyone outside. Here are some of the things that caught my eye this week.

When I wasn't busy with that, I've been writing letters to the school board, the mayor and the editor. We also went to a rally here in town - wearing masks. It was a busy week. It's always surprising to me how some weeks in the summer, I get less read than during the school year.

Last week in reading:

The Kingdom of Back was quite a unique tale based on the elder sister of Mozart. There's a bit of the magical about it and a lot of the frustrations of being a woman whose life decisions were made by her father.

The Stars and the Blackness Between Them will be with me for quite a while. There's also a bit of the magical about this one too. Family and love and death are all explored and I did shed some tears.

Tristan Strong Punches a Hole in the Sky was a fun middle grade adventure that I read with my ears. It started to get a little long, but I think that's because audio takes so much longer for me. Also, I was listening while doing other things and I had to keep going back because I'd find that I had gotten a little lost.

The Coming Week:
I have a few digital ARCs that I am going to begin, but I don't know which ones yet. I have also just started The Henna Wars. I wish you a great week of reading.

  1. I absolutely loved the photos you shared, Crystal! It's always so nice to hear about the real life things our reading community is involved in and I commend you for your dedication to continual growth, learning, and making your citizen voice heard. I've enjoyed the things I've read of Marie Lu's, so far. It sounds like The Kingdom of Back will be something I especially enjoy because of my personal research on Mozart (I was a music major for my undergraduate degree). I will have to see if we have it in my area. Thank you for these shares and I hope you have a wonderful reading week!

  2. These books sound great! The Kingdom of Back sounds like a really neat story about a person regretfully erased by the sexism of history, and The Stars and the Blackness Between Them sounds deep and wonderful as well! Thanks for the great post!

  3. Doing the class online must have been interesting, taking you to places you might not have been before. Someone just donated The Kingdom of Back to our bookstore so I snapped it up. I've loved Marie Lu's stories in the past. Now I'm reading your review of it! Hope I can get to it someday! Thanks, Crystal. I'm working to get out the vote, later, but now our first election is tomorrow!

  5. The Indigenous Arts and Sciences class sounds fascinating Crystal. I just put The Stars and the Blackness Between Them on hold as an audiobook. I'm looking forward to reading listening to it.

  7. Great pics and your course sounds interesting too. I remember reading an ARC of Tristan Strong and although I did like it, I thought it was a bit long as well.
