It's Monday! What are you reading?

It's Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Kathryn at Book Date. It's a great way to recap what you read and/or reviewed the previous week and to plan out your reading and reviews for the upcoming week. It's also a great chance to see what others are reading right now...you just might discover your next “must-read” book!

Kellee Moye, of Unleashing Readers, and Jen Vincent, of Teach Mentor Texts decided to give It's Monday! What Are You Reading? a kidlit focus. If you read and review books in children's literature - picture books, chapter books, middle grade novels, young adult novels, anything in the world of kidlit - join us! We love this meme and think you will, too. We encourage everyone who participates to visit at least three of the other kidlit book bloggers that link up and leave comments for them.

The Past Week in Books: I didn't read much this week because I was taking a week-long grad class - Ho-Chunk Indigenous Arts & Sciences. I was driving over two hours a day in addition to an 8 hr class so I was zonked and only watched my K-drama at night (Jewel in the Palace).

On Saturday, I spent a good chunk of the afternoon on the back porch with Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng and really enjoyed it. There was a lot to think about regarding adoption, colorblindness, family dynamics, meticulously planned lives and a bit of romance among other things. This one would be an excellent book for discussion. It was one of the books on my MustReadin2018 list. It's also on the Battle of the Books list for the local librarian battle in September. I need to get reading since there are nine more books on the list and it's the first one I have read for the battle. Eeek!

The Coming Week: I'm still reading Waking Up White and re-reading Braiding Sweetgrass. I'm about to start Children of Blood and Bone and will have more time to read this week so I may also read An American Marriage.

The Past Week on the Blog:

The Past Week in Books:
I read and enjoyed The Nature Fix by Florence Williams ahead of starting an outdoor class this week. It provides many reasons for getting out in nature. There are many health benefits. I'll be at an Earth Partnership class this week and wanted to get in the right frame of mind for it. Me, Frida, and the Secret of the Peacock Ring by Angela Cervantes was a fun middle grade mystery. I'm partial to anything related to Frida Kahlo. Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse was a great sci-fi/fantasy. See my review above if interested. I've read about 60 picture books and will continue read many each week, but there are way too many to comment on them at this point.

The Coming Week: I'm re-reading Braiding Sweetgrass and am starting to read Waking up White. Have a great week!

The Past Month in Life: I've been more than a little busy this past month. I traveled to South Korea and Japan, attended nErDcampMI, and visited family in Ohio. I have been reading throughout, but it's not been as focused and intentional as when life is a little more boring.
The Past Month in Books: Here are some of the books that stood out over the past month of reading.

I've been fortunate in getting my hands on some fantastic books. Many of the picture books were via Jillian Heise who again brought a ton of great picture books for us to look at during sessions at nErDcampMI. Do yourself a favor and get your hands on Yuyi Morales' Dreamers. It's gorgeous and the text is so relevant and lovely too. Zetta Elliott's books were amazing and wonderful. The two ARCs Zora & Me and Hearts Unbroken will get reviews later. Loved Unbroken. From Twinkle with Love was super fun.

The Coming Week: I'm reading Trail of Lightning and am loving it. I also have piles and piles of picture books to read. While I was gone many, many boxes came and I am swamped. Have a great week!

Last Week in Books:

My reading week did not go as planned. I didn't read any of the books I had expected, but I read quite a few anyway. I Was Born for This is a great YA contemporary fiction book and I'll be reviewing it at Rich in Color on Wed. It's one I'd recommend.

I am reading a ton of picture books so won't comment on all. The ones above that I will actually purchase for sure are Julián is a Mermaid, A Day with Yayah, The Brilliant Deep, and Drawn Together.

The Coming Week: I'll be reading Give Me Some Truth, but other than that, I'm not really making a plan. This week will be all about getting ready for my trip to Asia and working at a day camp so there's not a lot of free time.

Last Week in Books:

Meet Cute is a YA collection of fun short stories. I do love a good "meet cute" in romantic comedies. I also read a bunch of picture books. Some of them were underwhelming, but several were really cool and I'll be reading them with students for sure.

The Coming Week: I have the picture book Chester Nez and the Unbreakable Code, How I Resist, My So-Called Bollywood Life and Love Sugar Magic checked out from the library. We'll see what I can get to in this very busy last week of school. I have dinner with colleagues tomorrow, a study group dinner at my house on Wed (I'll make much of the food Tues night), an outing with a cousin Thursday evening and then it is officially summer break for me. Whew.

Celebrate!

Ruth Ayres has a link-up on weekends where people link to posts that are celebrations about their week. I love this reminder to celebrate every week and I appreciate the community we have through this link-up.

Celebrating Running

I'm celebrating running again. I signed up for a half-marathon in September. I'm not officially training yet, but will start in a few weeks. For now, it is enough to get out a few times a week. Last week I ran three times and finished 10 1/2 miles altogether. After not running much over the past six months, it's nice to know I can still get moving. The miles are going pretty slowly, but they are happening.

My favorite place to run is a nearby park. The trail is flat though so I wanted to find a way to get some hills into my run. The picture above is my newest route. When I run that direction, I get in a little over three miles. I run up and over a bridge twice and I get to look at the Mississippi River too. It's a win-win. Have a great week!
